What is the most realistic scene in the movie The Godfather?
The horse’s head in Jack Woltz’ room was a real horse’s head delivered in a crate in dry ice. The studio wanted Coppola to use a fake head. Coppola didn’t like it as it wasn’t real enough. He had scouts discover a dog food plant in New Jersey. There was a horse ready to be slaughtered. When finding one, Coppola asked to send him the head once it was slaughtered.
The real head added a greater sense of authenticity to the movie. While efforts were made to sanitize how the public saw the Mafia, it was moments like these that displayed how dangerous they can be if disrespected.
