Attention Airforwarders Association Members:East and Gulf Coast Dockworker Work Stoppage Looms What we know so far |
![]() As we mentioned last week, a potential work stoppage by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) threatens to disrupt operations at East and Gulf Coast ports starting midnight tonight, October 1st. This could have significant implications for air cargo movements as well. Here’s a summary of the situation: Negotiations Stalled: Talks between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have reached an impasse, raising the possibility of a strike.Government Intervention: The Biden administration has urged both parties to resume negotiations but hasn’t taken further action as of yet. Economic Impact: A work stoppage could cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars per day.CBP Prepared: Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is monitoring the situation and will provide updates on cargo processing procedures. FMC Issues Warning: The Federal Maritime Commission warns regulated entities to comply with all regulations during the potential strike. They will investigate reports of unlawful conduct.Monitor Port Advisories: Stay updated on the latest advisories from container terminals and ocean carriers. Canadian Strike Threat: Additionally, Canadian longshoremen at the Port of Montreal are planning a strike starting Monday morning. The Airforwarders Association is closely monitoring this situation and will provide further updates as they become available. We recommend that members:Communicate with clients: Inform your clients about potential delays and disruptions. Review contracts: Double-check your contracts regarding potential force majeure clauses related to strikes.Explore alternative options: If necessary, consider alternative routes or transportation modes for your air cargo shipments. Expect air cargo volume to increase. Shippers will likely use air cargo to transport ocean shipments. AfA members should anticipate capacity challenges and airport truck congestion delays. We understand this situation can be frustrating. The Airforwarders Association is here to support its members and advocate for a swift resolution to this labor dispute. Sincerely,The Airforwarders Association Brandon FriedAfA Executive Director |
