The last job I ever had was a manager for the now extinct Dominick’s Finer Foods in the 1970s. It was a learning experience that the lessons I use almost every day, from loading and stacking to purchasing food inventories for myself prudently.

As I read about the Kroger/Albertson’s merger it brings back the painful memories of the 2011 shutdown and all of my friends who still worked there losing their jobs as employment prospects in that sector innundated with desperate job seekers because of company shutdown forcing issue.

I truly hope that this merger, if it passes government scrutiny, does a better job in employee job placement than the disastrous Albertson’s jettison of Dominicks in 2011 which saw massive worker layoffs and dozens of “anchor” stores sitting vacant for years afterwards crippling the key traffic in the malls they were in and crushing the OTHER STORES business in the mall proper. Many malls suffered greatly for YEARS until market corrected itself with new tenants in were located in prime locations.

It looks like there will be many store closures here in Chicago area in overlap as many Jewel stores in close proximity to Marianos and those store closures PERFECT for Amazon to increase footprint in sector by taking over those locations as Amazon Fresh or even Whole Foods stores.

Time will tell
